Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Hi Friends,
I am first time trying to install oracle 8.1.7 and 8.1.6 is already installed.
I am just pointing the ORACE_HOME=new_dir
and ORACLE_SID=newsid and starting the installer.
Would there be any impact on the oracle 8.1.6?
So Please ...

Thanks & Regards
Syed

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Hi Syed,

Are you planning to use one version of oracle at a time. I don't think you can use both the verions of oracle at the same time. The listener might belong to only one version. You have to make sure that the new version of oracle installaion does not overwrite some of the oracle files from the old installation. files like /etc/oratab and things like that. Have you taken suggestion from oracle support folks on such a installation.

Hope this helps.

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Hello,
YOu can have two profile files for oracle installation.Revert the respective file when working with that release.
You can do a dual -installation,there is no problem.Make sure that you are pointing a different ORACLE_BASE and ORACLE_HOME for the new installation.
There is no problem with /etc/oratab as the file gets appended.

Thanks

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Hi,

stay with ORACLE_BASE unchanged, but ORACLE_HOME pointing to different location like here:

*before*:
ORACLE_BASE=/u/oracle/product
ORACLE_HOME=$ORACLE_BASE/8.1.6

*after*
ORACLE_BASE=/u/oracle/product
ORACLE_HOM=$ORACLE_BASE/8.1.7

you'll need about 2GB of diskspace on that filesystem, of course (Oracle 8.1.7 plus patches)...

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Hi:

There should be no problem at all. You can even run two separate versions of the listener as long as they are listening on different ports.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Thanks Lot EveryBody,

Now it is clear that,the only change is
ORACLE_HOME, pointing to diff mount point,

There'll not be any impact on the installed oracle software 8.1.6?
/etc/oratab --- is ok
how about /var/opt/oracle where oracle keeps info about the location of inventory?

So Please ...

Thanks & Regards
Syed

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

We run several different versions of Oracle on our severs. We keep them seperate by using
different users ( ora816, ora817,... )in group dba,with different ORACLE_HOME /opt/ora816,/opt/ora816. They share a common /etc/oratab, but have different
listeners.
If the newer version requires newer patches,
you may have to re-link the older versions.

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Multiple Oracle installations are not a problem. Just keep the product directories separated. Upgrade your databases from development to production, and update maintenance databases last.

Use a common oratab, which includes a field for the version of oracle to use with the database. You can use different listeners, but can use only the listener from the newest version. If you do use different listeners they will need to listen on different ports. If you access the database through a firewall, let the firewall administrator know what is happening.

Re: Dual Oracle Installations !!!

Its better you create a standard profile with the choice. Like pres1 for oracle 8.1.6 or 2 for 8.1.7. You just include the choice in the profile and according to that it should go to the different directory.

Good Luck!!!
