Error while Restoring a Oracle 9i image on Oracle 10g

Hi,
We have migrated from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g.
Hence we noe have to restore Oracle 9i image on the Oracle 10g. But I am getting some errors. I am listing the errors below:

=============================================
ORA-19870: error reading backup piece /tmp//level0
ORA-07202: sltln: invalid parameter to sltln.
============================================

Could you please help us resolve the issue?

Thanks and regards,
Kaustubh Kane.

Re: Error while Restoring a Oracle 9i image on Oracle 10g

What does Oracle 9i image on Oracle 10g mean ?
Are you saying that you are copying datafiles used by 9i environment onto a 10g environment and using the 10g Oracle binaries/installation to use this ?
Then, what does the statement "We have migrated from Oracle 9i to Oracle 10g" mean ? Migration essentially is database migration and needs to be carried out by the DBAs.

Please try to give some more details of your problem,what all you have done and what you are exactly trying to achieve, so that it can be understood appropriately.

Hi,

Are you using RMAN?

If this is something critical, i would prefer that you contact Oracle support.

Re: Error while Restoring a Oracle 9i image on Oracle 10g

As others have said, restoring a RMAN backup of a 9i database onto a 10g system is not going to work.

Are you saying you are trying to actually complete the upgrade in this fashion? It's simply not how you do Oracle upgrades and I can't beleive anyone would attempt this sort of thing without actually looking at the manuals (which describes the supported methods):

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238.pdf

Or are you saying that you now have to restore to a point before the upgrade? If so I'm afraid you will have to restore all your 9i binaries before attempting a restore of 9i RMAN backups.

hi again,

Also don't forget that when upgrading the database, you also need to upgrade the RMAN catalog.

Shalom,

To summarize:

When you install 10G on a system, if there is data in place, there are utilties and procedures that need to be followed to migrate the data.

To migrate 9i data, you will need to first restore the database using 9i software or migrate the database from a cold backup.

Procedures for either eventuality exist on http://metalink.oracle.com but you need support to access that site.

10G is quite capable of accessing 9i data, after its converted/migrated.
