fyi : Bill,

I was able to login as root once I'd commented out the # in the .profile relating to export DISPLAY, I then created a new user alex, who's unable to login, why ? /tmp =100% wont help - looks like a big fat file called LOG.OCMP.1 has eaten your diskspace and someones running java that's eating cpu .... let me know what happens when you clear out /tmp

since then it looks like some has stopped java and cleared out /tmp .... user alex is now seeing the CDE front panel etc ......

let me know if you still have problems I'll log back on and see what else I can do .....

Just to stop this pinging up!, the problem was that my pc was way too far away from the lab and root email seemed to work outbound...
didn't work inbound..!
