File size difference on PARISC and IPF..

Hi All,
We have oracle 11i running on HPUX 11iV3.
I have restored some oracle datafiles from PA-RISC server to IPF server. after restoration when asked DBA to bring up the database on IPF, it shows error that the datafile is not in multiple of the block size parameter of the database. the block size parameter value is set to 8192. also the same datafile are of different sizes in PA-RISC and IPF server. The database is fine and running on PA-RISC, where as when trying to start the Database on IPF it shows that error saying that the datafile size is not in multiple of 8192, hence the database is not coming up......Has any one faced such issue ???? need help

PA-RISC and IA64 are binary data compatible (i.e. you can just copy a binary data file from PA to IA and an IA program can read it.

So the difference between an IA and PA oracle datafile should be zero... I would be suspicious of your backup/restore process at this point.

Hi Vijay,

>>The database is not coming up

reasons;-
a) "The block size parameter value is set to 8192"

The "db_block_size" are not same on both the database. You cannot change this parameter ,only way to recreate the database with the identical block size.

b)You are just copying the dbf files from one database to other .

The SCN number of the file will be different and you cannot start the database.

If feel you can export the tablespaces/tables and import it on the new database after creating logical structure.

Re: File size difference on PARISC and IPF..

Shalom,

Though it varies from database version to version, Oracle provided different binaries for the same version IPF/PA-RISC. Depending on certain parameters, such as block size, http://metalink.oracle.com provided a conversion procedure for data.

It would be interesting to see how compatible the data files are if parameters such as block size were the same on both platforms.
