Re: Gnome for HPUX released

I guess a bit more info is needed.

Gnome looks to be an open source CDE replacement?

Why use it instead of CDE?

Re: Gnome for HPUX released

Does this mean enlightenment is or will be available also, or is there another window manager to use?

Re: Gnome for HPUX released

At the moment I'm not heavily involved in the project just know it's out there so I'm probably not the best person to answer these questions.

However I'm glad to see we have an alternative to CDE (choice is a good thing and I beleive Sun are offering similar) and its also a nice idea to have a universal desktop regardless of the underlying O/S ?.

I suspect gnome will become CDE's replacement but it wlll be some time away before it becomes the default ... the URL has details on this I beleive.

fyi if you have gnome installed and running gdm ,the gnome login panel allows your users to either select the old fashioned CDE desktop via the session option or to use gdm so it's not forcing it upon users just yet.

I suspect enlightment etc etc may well become available as the project gains momentum /stability but it's probably too early to expect everything you see on linux to be available under hpux.

The draw back .... I don't know gnome half as well as I know CDE ;)

Re: Gnome for HPUX released

Hi,

And the difference between this release and 1.4 which you can get from http://hpux.tn.tudelft.nl is that it will be supported by HP?

I'm going to have to draw a line under this post as I can see myself answering 100's of questions on this .... please read the web site and it's links first and use the appropriate feedback links on these pages if you have further questions.

Re: Gnome for HPUX released

anyone know the resource usuage difference between gnome and CDE. We are having problems with CDE eating up resources and if gnome was much different, we would consider moving.
