Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

Brando,

Believe you've run into the max # of open files the kernel will support.

You need to increase NFILE in the kernel parameters.

Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

Hi Brando,

Increase the kernel parameter NFILE.

Hope this helps.

Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

From ITRC DocID A4222348:

Problem Description

I am getting error number (errno) 23. What does it mean?

Configuration Info

Operating System - HP-UX
Version -10.01
Hardware System -K100

Solution

This is a file table overflow error. It generally means that your system has reached the configured limit for the nfile kernel parameter.

This can either imply that you need to increase this parameter due to an overall resource needs, or that there are one or more processes unnecessarily opening a large number of files.

Layered products like GlancePlus are useful for troubleshooting application and system resource problems.

Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

It simply means that your system has reached the configured limit for the "nfile" kernel parameter. Meaning you need to increase this parameter. You can use SAM to find out what is your current nfile value.
A system reboot is required to modify kernel parameters. By default, the kernel parameter "maxusers" is used in the calculation of several other parameters and you should increase this parameter to get the rest bumped up.

Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

Hi,

The kernel parameter 'nfile' should be increased in order to remove this error. You can do it through SAM.

Also check what is the current value, and why it is getting full ? Check other values like maxusers and nproc too.

Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

Everyone here is correct.

He needs to adjust the following kernel parmeters:

nfile - set nfile so that at max utilization
you have 50% utilized.

An easy fix for now would be to double
nfile.

Re: HPUX Error: 23: File table overflow

Thanks all for all your help. You all were "on the money" for what was causing my problem.

Special thanks to S.K. Chan for mentioning about the fact that by default, the kernel parameter "maxusers" is used in the calculation of several other parameters and that I should increase this parameter to get the rest bumped up.

It worked and thanks again all!
