Re: Help me, I am a beginer

Hi Maco

You will be having support plus CD, which contains patch bundle.
For 11i, it will be GOLDQPK11i i n the CD.
Insert the CD into CD drive
#mount /dev/dsk/cxtxdx /cdrom
(/cdrom is the mount point, cxtxdx is the device file for CD drive)
#swinstall -s /cdrom/GOLDQPK11i

This will install patches .

for installing oracle application procedure look into http://otn.oracle.com
never give up

Re: Help me, I am a beginer

Linh,
First of all: welcome to the community of Sysadmins and DBA's. These are full-time careers, and you won't be able to learn it all at once. It will take you many years before you can call yourself an expert in either discipline. Without question, you will make mistakes. When you do, learn from them.

Next, get some books. O'Reilly press has probably the best selection of books, but don't limit yourself. The best bet is to find another Sysadmin or DBA who can mentor you. You might be able to locate a Users Group, or club where you can find someone to teach.

There is much to learn. I installed my first Unix system 20 years ago, and I learn something new about my trade every day. Nobody, nowhere knows everything there is to know about Unix or Oracle, so all you can do is learn as much as you can, as fast as you can.

Next: take some classes. These can be from HP Education, or any number of other organization. These are not cheap, but usually worth the money and time. In a week or so, you can pick up enough learning to get you through your first year.

Then there are two things: FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, and GET HELP. If the instructions call for patch number PHKL_2543, make sure that you have that patch or whatever patch(es) replace it. Secondly, you need to have some sort of support contract with HP and Oracle. Without these, you have nothing to fall back on, and will be left to your own wits to solve problems. With them, you can be 'talked through' any issues, and sooner or later make everything work as planned.

Learn to be very concise. When you are on the phone to the help desk, call out every letter as you type, or at least every command BEFORE you press . You'll make spelling and syntax mistakes, this is normal. Calling out the words and letters as you type will reduce these.

You can get patches from this website: itrc.hp.com. You'll need to spend some time finding out exactly which patches. If your instructions are written, then they're old and probably refer to out-of-date patches. These will undoubtedly have been superseded by now. So install the replacement patches, but DOCUMENT these replacements.

Lastly: give yourself time. You won't get it right the first time, every time. But consider that "close is good enough", until your skills really go up. And don't be afraid to ask questions in this forum or elsewhere.

Good Luck

Re: Help me, I am a beginer

You could not have picked a harder thing to try as your first sysadmin project.

I work with Oracle's Application Server, forms, reports and apache, which uses a lot of the same core technology as the 11.5.8 server.

Its a really tough nut.

For sure, every patch mentioned above. Pay particular attention to gettiing compiler patches, all the required java patches and last certified version at http://www.hp.com/go/java before you start the installation.

Go through that install manual line by line. If something doesn't work, stop, contact oracle support. Blowing off steps almost always comes back to bite you. HARD.

If you don't like Oracle's support answers, escalate, call a duty manager and ask for an expert. Plus post here, there are others that have been through your pain.

* Rubs my sore you know what.

Good luck

If you are new, give these other nice people some points please. Thats how it works here. Sometimes.

Re: Help me, I am a beginer

Hi Linh,
Welcome to the world of system / database administration.

First get out some book on Sysadmining. If you want to learn HP Unix in specific, check out the book on HP unix Certification by Rafeeq Ur Rehman. It will help u get certified at a later date as well.

Be around on the forums and keep reading. It will help u get more knowledge.

And when you have a doubt feel free to ask the gurus out here. There will be someone to help you out.

Good luck.

Cheers

In addition to everyone very good pointers, you will need to become familiar with Oracle's metalink support site. I would highly recommend that you signup. All you will need is a valid CSI number. When we install 11.5.5, we found a note the listed all the HP-UX patches that oracle required.
