Impact on Oracle 8i when upgrading from HP Ux 11.0 to 11i

Basically, I am looking for detail information on how can these 2 different versions of unix with same Oracle version can impact Pro*C programs, C programs, shell scripts, PL/SQL programs and is there a way to resolve these issues. What are the possible issues I may face if a Proc or a C program compiled in version 11i is used in OS version 11.0?

I think there is no impact since Oracle 8i is supported both on HP-UX 11.0 and HP-UX 11i.
Each and every day is a good day to learn.

The big difference would depend on whether you run 32 bit or 64 bit Oracle. Or, more correctly, if you switch. That would impact your C/Pro*C programs.

Hi Saket,

From Oracle RDBMS release there will not be a change if you had Oracle 8i on HP-UX 11.0 and now you are upgrading to HP-UX 11i (11.11) with same relase of oracle 8i. Oracle 8i is certified for both the releases of HP-UX OS.

The changes for your C programs will be if you change form 32-bit OS to 64-bit OS (HP-UX 11.0 & 11i can be either 32-bit or 64-bit). Then you will have to change the compile options to include 64-bit parameters and re-compile and generate the object code and executables.

I had migrated recently from HP-UX 10.20 to HP-UX 11i. I had to recompile all the C and Pro*C programs.

Pl/SQL progrmas will have no effect when the oracle release is the same.

Re: Impact on Oracle 8i when upgrading from HP Ux 11.0 to 11i

As such there shouldn't be any impact on upgrading your OS (For this you need to ask for 11.00 to 11.11 upgrade pack). Once upgrade is done, then you should be able to run your applications seamlessly.

Upgrading from 11.00 to 11.11, you an certainly see a improvement in performance. 11.11 with the latest available patch should be much faster than the 11.00.

As someone mentioned, there may be some issues if you move from 32 bit to 64 bit platform, but I think that is not the case for you as of now. Moreover, as such all 32 bit applications should run seamlessly on 64 bit machines.

Go ahead and upgrade the OS :-).

If the bit number remains the same, all you should need to do is relink.

If its a 32 bit to 64 bit upgrade, you can't do it, you need to reinstall the software if you want 64 bit oracle.
