Installation of Oracle

Hi!!I'm having a hard time instaling oracle 7.3.4 on my hp-ux(9000) 11.11. When i try doing a swlist command it prompts an error. See error message below:
# Initializing...
# Contacting target "vantive"...
ERROR: Could not contact host "vantive". Make sure the hostname is
correct and an absolute pathname is specified (beginning with
"/").
ERROR: More information may be found in the daemon logfile on this
target (default location is vantive:/var/adm/sw/swagentd.log).

Other thing, when i try to use sam it prompts an error message. Error Message in the attachment.

thanks.

Re: Installation of Oracle

Hi Allan,
Is vantive the server on which you are installing oracle.

If so check:
# hostname
This should return vantive as name.
Check /etc/host for correct entry of "vantive", see if any control character are present in the file. If you doubt, try recreating /etc/hosts file.

Hope that helps.

Re: Installation of Oracle

Check name resolution is proper for this do a host command to IP & hostname..

I think this error is due to "swagentd" not running ... start it .. there should be a shell script in /sbin/init.d

BTW , I was told by a forumer that oracle is not installed using SD-UX !

Re: Installation of Oracle

Hi,

Could you check your /etc/nsswitch.conf

hosts: files [notfound=continue] dns

# swagentd -r

Re: Installation of Oracle

The error message is self explanatory. Check the hoostname as defined in /etc/hosts.

Also check the path entered. It has to be absolute path.

I believe this version is not supported by Oracle now.

Re: Installation of Oracle

Hi,

Do:

#hostname

And tell me what you get?

If it not set (set to NULL) or anothere name that is not the server name do:

#hostname vantive

And as Kapil said you must have swagentd ruunning...

Re: Installation of Oracle

The suggestions about name resolution et al above are correct to fix swagent, however Oracle is not released as a depot.

If I remember correctly, 7.3.4 was a curses install script, by the name of orainst. Mount your cd and run the orainst binary from there.

Re: Installation of Oracle

Hi Allan,

From experience I have always installed Oracle using the runInstaller on the Oracle supplied CD & not via swinstall.
Check the Oracle installation documentation for mounting Oracle supplied CD.
