Re: Intalling oracle 9i (9.2.0.2)
find the oraInst.loc file.
I believe this should be in /var/opt/oracle
check permissions
check content
You should have the location for inventory_loc
Check ownership and permissions of such directory.

Re: Intalling oracle 9i (9.2.0.2)
Could check Metalink doc Note:1014462.102 "OraInventory does not Exist or is not Writable"
This is for oracle8i nut I believe this can be applied for 9i

Solutionalso did you check Metalink Note:201023.1 "HP-UX: Quick Start Guide - 9.2.0 RDBMS Installation"
It points to another document Note:189256.1 "UNIX: Script to Verify Installation Requirements for Oracle 8.0.5 to 9.2 versions of RDBMS"

Re: Intalling oracle 9i (9.2.0.2)
you should have run the InstallPrep.sh script before the installation.
The script has a rule set that performs the following tests:
* OS certified?
* Other O_Hs in PATH?
* oraInventory perms
* /tmp adequate?
* Swap (in Mb)
* RAM (in Mb)
* SwapToRAM OK?
* Disk Space OK?
* Kernel params OK?
* Links and libs OK?
* Got ld,nm,ar,make?
* ulimits OK?
* User in /etc/passwd?
* Got OS packages?
* Got OS patches?
* Other OUI up?
* Group in /etc/group?
* Input ORACLE_HOME
* ORACLE_HOME valid?
* O_H perms OK?
* Umask set to 022?
* LDLIBRARYPATH unset?
* SHLIB_PATH unset?
kind regards
