Kernel tuning for 2 databases in Oracle 8.1.7

Hi,

Currently our customer has an Oracle 8.1.7 database with one instance running on HP-UX 11.00. The application that our customer running on is HP OpenView Operations and Network Node Manager. Our customer requested us to create another database (instance) on the same machine to cater for HP Reporter database. We were thinking of whether we need to re-tune the kernel settings as we had tuned the kernel according to the values required by HP OpenView Installation Guide for Operations.

Prior to the first database creation, we had set the the following values as per Oracle requirements:

SHMMAX = 1 GB
SHMMNI = 256
SHMSEG = 120
SEMMNI = 140
SEMMNS = 400

Refer to the attached files for the current kernel settings on the system output by kmtune and sysdef.

Please advise should you think the current values are not sufficient to cater for two Oracle databases.

Thank you in advance.

Regards,
Melvin

Hi

The parameters SHMMNI SEMMNI SEMMNS should be increased by the same amount for 2 databases.

Also look at increasing nproc maxuprc nflocks
nfile ninode by 10%

That should suffice

Don't forget that maxdsiz, maxdsiz_64bi, maxtsiz, maxtsiz_64bit, maxssiz, and maxssiz_64bit need to be set.

I would recommend recommend increasing maxssiz(_64bit) to over 128m. Also, I would increase maxusers to 128-256 (sets alot of different parameters).

I'm attaching kmtune output from a machine in the oracle test labs. It is comparable to mine, 11.11 64 bit.

Don't ask me where I got it.
