Migration of Oracle database from HP UX 11.31 – Itanium to HP UX 11.11on PA RISC server

Is it possible to restore RMAN backup of an oracle Database (version 9.2.0.8) from HP UX 11.31 – Itanium server to HP UX 11.11on PA RISC server ? If possible please provide me the steps to do this. Also please provide me the documents related to this.

why are taking a reverse?
just for your info, Oracle binaries are different for itanium and pa-risc.

I think it will work, as long as you're just moving the database files, and not the database's ORACLE_HOME directory.

Just make sure that you're at the same patch level, etc.

Copy the data files from cold backup (without TEMP files). Create a "backup control file to trace", and then copy this file over to the HP PA-Risc database, and then edit it to create a new control file and new database name (if desired).

Also, make sure that you're doing this is in a TEST environment first, and really run the database through its paces. Also, make sure and check for bad blocks before you move the database, immediately after the move and it's been brought up, and then, again repeating the checks very often during stress testing.

Now, as far as this whole thing being "supported", I don't know, but then again, Oracle Database 9i isn't supported by Oracle any longer, so it doesn't really much matter - if you have serious problems, you're on your own anyway.

Re: Migration of Oracle database from HP UX 11.31 – Itanium to HP UX 11.11on PA RISC server

In order to migrate DB from PA RISC to Itanium server, we need to upgrade the PA RISC server from 11.11 to 11.23 (11i V2) with the Sep'04 update patches. But in my case, I cannot upgrade the PA RISC server to higher release. This is reason for choosing RMAN backup and restore from PA RISC to Itanium server.

This is confusing. Are you trying to migrate your files from PA-RISC to Itanium or it is the other way around?

Re: Migration of Oracle database from HP UX 11.31 – Itanium to HP UX 11.11on PA RISC server

I need to move an Oracle database (version 9.2.0.8) from HP UX 11.31 â Itanium server to HP UX 11.11on PA RISC server. I can take either hot backup or cold backup of the database. But to copy the files by traditional manner like ftp/rcp or moving the database disks physically or logically, I need to upgrade the PA RISC server from 11.11 to 11i v2 (11.23) September 2004 (or later) release (As per HP Migration Documents). In my case, I cannot upgrade the PA RISC server.

Hence I am planning to take a RMAN backup of oracle database (9.2.0.8) from HP UX 11.31 â Itanium server and to restore it in the PA RISC server HPUX 11.11.

I need to know Whether it is possible or not? If possible can I get those documents.

This means that you will only restore the ORACLE data files from one server (Itanium) to another (PA RISC).

This assumes that you do have the ORACLE binaries already installed on both servers (you do have the 2 instances running).

I would start by reading the rman user manual available at:

http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/toc.htm

From the same manual you should double read the part "Duplicating a Database with Recovery Manager"

Shalom,

Certainly such a move is possible. 9.2.0.8 will run on both platforms. You will need to make sure you meet patching guidelines available from Oracle Metalink.

http://technet.oracle.com may have some migration documents as well.

Best place to get the steps is Metalink, which requires an Oracle support contract.

Not sure, whether rman or a database export or a simple database file copy is the best method.
