Most popular Unix

I'm looking for a site/report detailing the most popular Unix. I'm currently on a site supporting HP-UX, AIX, and Solaris. Of course the AIX admins say "why would you want to use anything but AIX?"....

I found this site:

http://www.idgnet.com/english/crd_unix_493232.html

But I would like to see an installed base - that is how many servers are running HP-UX, etc...

Re: Most popular Unix

Geoff

Popualarity of unix is kind of based on the type of industry you are working in. Some examples of this would be financial institutions/brokerage firms & banks that prefer Sun Solaris (sorry HP).

Another example is the health care field where most client sites are using HP-UX.

3rd example is from industrial sites that preface AIX.

As you can see it's kind of a mixed bag. I am saying this from personal experience since I have worked in these 3 industries (currently healthcare).

Another factor that does enter the equation is the cost of servers, in most cases it boils down to vendor level discounts on each platform and also what platforms the applications will be supported on.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Hi Goeff,

I can only say it for the health Industry in Germany, lets say mainly the hospital were using dec Alphas, former DIGITAL then Compaq and now I think HP :)

Re: Most popular Unix

I used to work in the DOD. ( I could tell a lot of secrets, but I would have to kill you ). And I touched most everything there. BSD, Linux, Solaris, HPUX, AIX, and dare I say, 3B2 (never again). Everyone had their favorites and it mostly had to do with what they were most comfortable and familar with. Everything has it's place and they all have things to like and dislike.

As far as market share I believe that it goes, Solaris, HPUX, AIX, in that order.

Re: Most popular Unix

Thanks for the responses so far - sorry - our German admin left - so I don't have an interpreter :)

I have been an Sys/Unix Admin now for 12 years and have worked with almost all flavours of Unix (HP-UX, Aix, Solaris, Irix, BSDI, Linux, Ultrix, SCO) in various industries: Government, Hi-Tech, Geo Services, Airline, .com, and now Oil & Gas.

Except for the .com, all of those industries had HP-UX.

Re: Most popular Unix

Hello Geoff,

Try

http://www.netcraft.com

It contains statistics about webservers on the net. You can get some information about the hosts there too.

This guy here:

http://www.apostols.org/projectz/queso

Used to have a survey of operating systems on the web (including many different unix flavors), but his site is refusing connections as we speak (I don't know if it's a temporary situation)

Hope it helps,

Re: Most popular Unix

Marco, that was somewhat helpful - but it only pertains to "Internet" servers - I'm looking for overall use...IE: What is the HP-UX installed base? or how many licenses has IBM sold of AIX? etc...
