After upgrading OS from 11.0 to 11.i do we really need to relink oracle or oracle 8.1.7.4 will work ?

1. I would install HP-UX 11i direct, rather than upgrade (there are many posts on this subject).

2. Definitely relink Oracle afterwards (Use the make commands specified by oracle).

Hi,

We upgraded from 11.0 to 11i a few months ago here, and our Oracle DBAs had to relink our binaries. I'm not a DBA, but they said it was pretty smooth and painless.

Ian is right. We did a cold install here also for the O/S, and not an upgrade.

Re: OS upgrade from 11.0 to 11.i . do we really need to upgrade/relink oracle ??

1) You MUST relink oracle.

2) The upgrade path is harder and a bad idea.

You are better off with a cold install, then the latest Gold Quality Pack, then the required oracle patches, then java patches, then java, then oracle, then migrate your data.

You can't reliably pull off an upgrade on a single production server.

The others are correct. You must relink Oracle. You should also relink Oracle anytime that you apply Networking or Kernel patches. We now relink Oracle after we apply our quarterly patch bundles due to past MC/SG - Oracle issues. It's quite simple with 8.x and up:

relink all (8.x and up)

Hi,

after upgrade you need to relink the oracle.

I prefer to do cold install rather than upgrade to 11i. it creates problem later, even though it looks fine now

DONT!
DONT!

Hesitate some more.

Based on a half decade of experience with Oracle and a decade of HP-UX experience let me tell you this:

You can not do this on a production box without substantial downtime. Even if everything goes perfectly, it will take a long time.

It will not go perfectly.

If you peridodically upgrade hardware, buy a new box, build it with the new OS and make the last step of your migration plan migrating the oracle data.

That's how we do it.

Re: OS upgrade from 11.0 to 11.i . do we really need to upgrade/relink oracle ??

Sorry Steven I don't agree. We have just completed O/S upgrades on half of our SAP environemnt, 12 oracle instances. We did cold HP-UX 11i installs using ignite and can complete the entire upgrade in a three hour window. The relink of oracle takes maybe 10 minutes tops.

We put in a lot of up front work, building our ignite image and testing the upgrade procedure in our technical sandbox. But now we have a repeatable procedure that has not failed us in the first six upgrades.

Good luck Anand, and be sure to test, document, test again till you are comfortable with your the procedure.
