OS upgrade

I have HP-UX 11.0 running on my servers and the version of oracle is 8.17, I want to upgrade OS to 11i or 11.23. My question is that if Oracle 8.1.7 is supported on HP-UX 11i or 11.23 because I wanna upgrade the software without touching the database.

Re: OS upgrade

Maybe for 11.11 but definately not for 11.23.

You will have to at a minimum apply oracle patches if going to 11.11.

After all the time spent trying to make sure things work and testing testing testing you will still be better off upgrading oracle to at least 9i or just leaving things the way they are.

Do you know what patches to apply or any oracle site where I can go and see the list of patches required for 11.11 or any oracle site about hp-ux upgrade.

Re: OS upgrade

Shalom,

You will need to touch the database.

Few issues:
1) Oracle 8.1.7 is out of support.
2) Oracle does not support upgrade-ux as an upgrade method.
3) Many 11.00 HP-UX systems can not even run HP-UX 11.23
4) upgrade-ux is classically unreliable and would require an HP-UX 11.11 stage before 11.23
5) Best practices indicate that a cold install of the latest supported OS for your hardware(not revealed) followed by new installation of oracle database server software. If the database is on its own disk, the database itself can be left untouched, by excluding those desks from the installation.

Summary: No. You can not do what you propose.

You should think Oracle first. Go to metalink.oracle.com. You will need to be registered user to access this site. If you have Oracle support then you will most probably be able to get all the desired information.

On metalink, you will also get the RDA script that will help you in planning your database installation on the machine.

In terms of HP-UX patches, you will have to install the latest patch bundles which is available here itself.

If you need any further assistance, please let us know.
