Oracle 8.0.5 on UX 10.20

I have a 9000 K580 with 1G of memory. My concern is with the SHMMAX value that Oracle is recommending as a MINIMUM. The value they are recommending is 4G. That seems extremely high to me (especially since I only have 1G of memory). Does this number seem normal to you guys already up on Oracle 8? I guess I'm looking for some confirmation before I rebuild my kernel with this value. Please let me know what you think.

It won't do any harm to set it that high but you can set it to a lower, more reasonable value if you want to.

We've got it set to 1Gb on several servers running 8.0.5.

Re: Oracle 8.0.5 on UX 10.20

Hi,
If you go on sam-kernel Config->configurable parameters, hilight the shmmax and press F1 key, you'll get instant info in that kernel param.
so, the min for shmmax is 2k and max 1792Mb, default 0x04000000=64M.
Hope this helps.

F1 help is available if you start sam in gui.

Re: Oracle 8.0.5 on UX 10.20

Hi David,

I have oracle 8.0.5 upgraded to 8.0.5.2.2 for MTS. Anyway, the systems are dong fine with just disk bottlenecks from time to time during heavy queries. Swap space is 2200Mb total. Attached is my kernel parameters for all the HP900/K580/800 series.
I encountered problems initially which where sorted out for a greater understanding of the servers and HPUX. Thanks to pointers from peers on forum.

Cheers!

Re: Oracle 8.0.5 on UX 10.20

Hello David,
since you are using HP-UX 10.20 the maximum shared memory segement you may have is 1GB in size. That's an OS limit (and Oracle Corp seems to not know it).
You dont waste a bit if you set this parameter to 1GB, but it might be impossible
to boot with 4G :-(
There is a white paper about "Application Domains/Memory Windows" ob HP-UX11
which explains the memory architecture of HP-UX 10.20!

Re: Oracle 8.0.5 on UX 10.20

We have a K460 with 1.5G of memory and a 3G swap file, running HP-UX 11.0 and Oracle 8.0.5 and Oracle Financials 11.0. Our SHMMAX parameter is set to the default of 64Meg. We have been up and running since about September 1999. I'm confused about something, though: Oracle 8.0.5 on HP-UX 10.20? According to Metalink, this combination isn't even supported.
