Oracle 8.1.7 Installation on HP-UX

Hi, I have to install Oracle 8.1.7 EE 64bit on HP machine and I am new in HP-UX environment. Is there some points to consider before starting installation? How dow I find I out if my HP machine is runing 32 or 64bit OS? Any patch to apply?

If you are using v 11.0 you can do the following to find out if your machine using 32 or 64 bits use:

getconf KERNEL_BITS.

To install oracle, you will need to use pfs_mount rather than mount for the cd's. Again if you are on v11.0 there are some patches you can install to enable you to use the normal mount command. I think they are PHKL_21586 PHCO_26449 PHKL_26450 but double check on the patch database as my memory is not as good as it used to be.

You will probably need to change some kernel parmaters. However if you install the Monolothic kernel (you can do this via sam) it is a good starting point and works well for us.

Hi,

file /stand/vmunix
will report something like ELF-64 executable object file if your kernel is 64bit, it has to be in order to run 64 bit Oracle.

Ensure that you have a late version QPK patch bundle installed and you should be OK for HP-UX patches (June or September 2002).

Have a look at Oracle's recommendations in the documentation provided with the software for kernel tuning. From memory, I believe that the parameter maxdsiz must be at least 256Mb to install Oracle 64bit. Also you need quite a lot of temporary space available in /tmp (or wherever you export TMPDIR to point to before running the installer).

2. Tune Kernel:
maxdsiz=1GB
maxdsiz_64=2GB
SHMMAX=physical memory
SEMMNI=4096
SEMMNS=8192
SHMMNI=512
SHMSEG=32
(Follow the Oracle release Note req.)

Hi Nadeem,

if you are installing Oracle 8.1.7, think of installing the latest patches released by oracle; you should at least have the patch 8.1.7.2 installed, as this fixes the most crucial bugs, but should install 8.1.7.4.

If you've got a metalink access, go to metalink.oracle.com, choose the Patches tab, and choose :
release: 8.1.7.4
Limit search to:Latest Product Pachsets or Minipacks

and download the readme file as well as the patchset...

Oracle won't ship you anything earlier than 8.1.7 release three anyway.

You MUST be as current as possible with bug fixes on the OS. You need not add any oracle patches to the database from our experiences.

If you are taking an Ignite level 2 image of the machine, you should stop using oracle. Shut it down. sqlplus will mess up while the /etc/group file is changed for the creation of the golden image.

Ignite won't image up data files larger than 2G because it uses pax.

You can Ignite an entire system, push or pull, then pull the datafiles with ftp or sftp or NFS copy and then start the database straight away.

You can also change the instance names in configuration and /etc/oratab with an Ignite Post Configuration script.

The Ignite magic works. You can save a ton of work if you use it.
