Re: Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

Hi,

we have an Oracle Database with large amount of Archived RedoLogs. The Database is generating about 5GB of RedoLogs per day with growing tendency.

Is it possible to write the Archived RedoLogs directly to a LTO Drive 940 ?

Any concerns ?

Thanks

Re: Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

Wolfgang,
just the usual:
1. Which method are going to use (fbackup,tar,rman...)? I would suggest rman
2. Throughput? How much time are you allowed for backups. Can you put the drive onto a seperate i/o card?
3. Restore? Have you got a recovery plan and management buying?

I'm sure others will have many more.

Re: Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

Hi,

thanks for the Information.

We want to know if it is possible to map the LTO Drive as a regular Operating System Drive.

The specifications say we can use a WORM with this Drive. It may be possible to map the WORM Drive as a regular Drive.

How about a regular LTO Drive ?`

Thanks

Wolfgang,
have a look at the thread:

LTOs are in use and people are using them for seriously big backups.
We don't have any LTOs here, so can not give definitive answer, but the answer to your second post seems to be 'yes'.

Re: Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

hi,

possible? sure. BUT ...

Our warehouse produces > 8GB per day of archived redo logs. We still put them on a filesystem. Doesn't everybody say "disks are cheap". They are backed up twice before they are removed from disk.
On disk gives you the possible advantage of recovery without restore.

What during tape rewinds? DB hanging until new tape available
What with bad tapes?
...

Thierry.
All unix flavours are exactly the same . . . . . . . . . . for end users anyway.

Re: Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

Hi,

we have days with huge number of archive log files.
We wrote a script to gzip them on a regular basis (gzip all but last one).
compression ratio is 4-5 times.

works fine for us.

Re: Oracle Archived Redo Logs directly to LTO Drive 940

hi,

yOu may wish to schedule RMAN backups at regular intervals and send the files to tape as they are being backup.

I would prefer to use RMAN to backup the redologs to file every 30 or 60 minutes and then backup the RMAN backup files to the LTO.
