Oracle Migration Help

Hi,

We are planning to migrate from Oracle 7.3.4 to Oracle 9.2

I'm just a developer in oracle and i have never did migration before. Can anyone please let me know what are the aspects i need to
take care of or worry about. Also any link/books that would help me in this regard.

Thanks

Re: Oracle Migration Help

There is no direct mirgraion path.

First you must upgrade the data to 8.1.7, then up can upgrade it directly to 9.2.

The procedure is also available at http://otn.oracle.com

Re: Oracle Migration Help

I recommend looking into doing an export/import depending on your availiable resources. You'll have the ability to go to Locally Managed Tablespaces, eliminate and fragmentation that has occurred over time, and some other advantages(at least in my mind). Not to mention you can install 9.2 (and get the patches now not later) and test-run the migration first. Of course a lot of the strategy will depend on wether you have enough disk space to hold both databases, or your going to a seperate box, etc. If you've never been there, metalink as Steven said has plenty of information, just keep searching for topics as you realize the snags, it will quickly become your first point of reference.

Re: Oracle Migration Help

You are going to be busy.
As above you need to go via 8i to get from 7.x to 9i, and 7 is quite old so you may struggle to find documentation.
The oracle 8i docs are at http://otn.oracle.com/documentation/oracle8i.html
If you're doing the upgrade in place, then the installer will recognise the older version and upgrade it for you.
If you're going to a new box, you'll need to do an fresh install and export the 7.3.4 database and import it to 8i.

It's a similar process from 8 to 9.
Docs are at http://otn.oracle.com/documentation/oracle9i.html

And don't forget to update your client s/w.

Re: Oracle Migration Help

Hi Raj,

There is no direct path to migrate Oracle database from release 7.3.4 to release 9.2.0

You will have to migrate in thow phases.

1. From Oracle 7.3.4 to Oracle 8i (preferable 8.1.7)

2. From Oracle 8.1.7 to Oracle 9.2.0

So install Oracle 8i and Oracle 9i in different homes respectively (and different from oracle 7.3.4).

Then refer to the attachment for "Checklist for Migrating from Oracle7 to Oracle8.doc" to migrate the database from 7.3.4 to 8.1.7. I had migrated few database following this document.

When the database is in 8i then take a full cold backup of the database.

Then follow the guidelines of the attachment "migrating from oracle 8 to oracle 9.doc" to migrate from 8i to 9i. These are only guidelines. It would be better if the DBA was near by.

I hope this helps.

Re: Oracle Migration Help

Actually, note 132904.1 on metalink does say you can import a 7.3.4 Export file into 9.2. There are some requirements, I think I didn't read it too closely. Open an iTar and ask to be sure.

Re: Oracle Migration Help

I am also doing oracle migration from Oracle 7.5 to 9.2.
I have following queries about migration.
How to test migrated data???
In migration we are having 600GB data.
Which method is best for migration???
Thanks in advance.
Bye...
