Oracle Standby server run in IA-64

Can I setup Oracle primary server in HPUX 9000/800 AND standby server in HPUX IA-64?

Re: Oracle Standby server run in IA-64

I don't know for sure but as Oracle standby technology is completely handled by Oracle, I can't see that it would matter much what the platform was.

I would say though that we use standby technology for our largest database and we really wish we didn't. The standby goes out of sync about once a day and sometimes takes an hour or so to catch up again. Whilst it is doing this, we can see no obvious system bottlenecks.

Hi,

It's possible, but you need to have oracle(installble) for RISC as well for Itanium.

The working concept of database is same irrespective of platforms and hardware

Re: Oracle Standby server run in IA-64

It may throw suprises.

What you are contemplating is that archive logs created under HPUX 9000/800 will get applied without any issue on a standby database server on HPUX IA-64?

Need to be tested.

Oracle doesn't support stand by database across differente platforms, for example, between Linux and HP-UX, Windows and Linux.
In your case, you must use the same HP-UX version (11i) and I think it will work.

Re: Oracle Standby server run in IA-64

Yes you can.

Issues: You need the same database version and word size. You can not have one running 32 bit word size and the other 64.

Oracle specifically supports an environment where on the same version of the database you can have one serve as a standby. Oracle's Parellel server product may be useful.

There may be little surprises, as noted above and it makes upgrades more interesting.

Re: Oracle Standby server run in IA-64

I've tried to setup Primary on hpux and standby server in linux . Of course , It doesn't work at all.
I want to make sure that if I could implement oracle active-standby on the same OS version (HPUX 11.11i) but different
hardware architecture (PA-RICE & IA-64)??

Re: Oracle Standby server run in IA-64

I would think that you can't mix LINUX and HP-UX because one is little endian (LINUX) and the other is big endian (HP-UX), so if the logs are binary files, then you would have problems. HP-UX 11i v1 is on pa-risc today and HP-UX 11i v2 on Itanium, so they are not exactly the same. This might be better possibility once HP-UX 11i v2 is released on pa-risc.
