Putty and SSH

Q1) I have installed Putty on my PC (win 2000)
basically to do ftp (mostly) between PC and HP-UX 10.20

Q2) Do I need to install SSH on HP-UX 10.20
Do I have to install this.

Thanks

Re: Putty and SSH

You only need to install SSH if you're going to use that protocol. If you're going to rely on ftp and telnet then you do not need SSH.

Hello!

Depend on how you gonna use the putty,
if you gonna use secure connection then you need ssh on HP if not then not.

Re: Putty and SSH

Hi Basheer,

Yes you will. putty is designed to work only with SSH.
Your problem will be the fact that HP has not packaged SSH for HP-UX 10.2 - only for 11.x. So you'll have to obtain the source along with it's dependencies (OpenSSL & zlib) & compile it for 10.2.
I'll spare you the lecture that 10.2 goes off support Monday night.

Jeff

Re: Putty and SSH

I want to use Secure connection, planning to write a script to do ftp from PC to UX.

I dont want to use ftp, where I have to encode the username and password into the script.

If I need SSH for HP-UX where do I get it

Re: Putty and SSH

Hi Basheer,

Yes you will need to ahve SSH on the HP server if you intend to use ssh/scp or sftp. Otherwise no.

Re: Putty and SSH

Hi,

You can get the OpenSSH 3.1.6p1 here:

http://hpux.cs.utah.edu/hppd/hpux/Networking/Admin/openssh-3.6.1p1/

All the dependency sources are there as well.

Re: Putty and SSH

SSH provides a way to secure "telnet" communications, it has ssh ftp service. so you don't not need Putty at all. You may take a look at this link for client ssh:

Re: Putty and SSH

putty will work with regular telnetd if you tell it to.

The product was however designed to work with secure shell.

There are no depots for Secure Shell for 10.20, which becomes obsolete in a few days. The source code though will compile and run without too much bother.

I'm attaching some great Chris Vail docs on configuration after the install.

I use and like putty btw, nice product.
