Hi,

Was Oracle RAC (Real Application Cluster) available starting with version 9i of Oracle ?
I mean RAC technology was not available in Oracle 8i.. right ??

For 8i was called:

Oracle8i Parallel Server (OPS)

Before 9i Oracle had its 'parallel server' = OPS.

This worked most of the time but needed very careful tuning (gc_lock_to_files) for optimal results and it 'pinged' over the disk subsystem to share data.

With 9i, came RAC and its clame to fame is 'cache fusion'. This is where the Oracle instances will communicate data blocks directly from cache to cache over a cluster interconnect. Supposedly it is also easier to tune, but I suspect that many customers opt for partitioning of data, and didling with gc_file_to_lock after all in order to get decent scaling.
