I agree with the others - reducing /var is not such a good idea - you'll need to increase it in the future. Also with onlineJFS, it says you can reduce an lvol without unmounting. But, I've had problems with this.

Kerry,
I disagree with the others about not reducing var. Size it correctly and maintain your system. I know that disks are cheap, but "waste" the space on more important stuff. On all my systems /var is a reasonably small size.
The best way without downtime is as mentioned is to make a new /var2, cpio, change fstab and reboot.
