SAP / Oracle data restoration problem

Hi All

We are facing problem while restoring the backup on our RP5430 Server,11i.
The backup is taken using the inbulit SAP utility brbackup (which inturn uses cpio).

The SAP Data is there in Disk Station DS2100 connected thru 4si RAID card and configured in RAID 5.Two disk were failed and we made the disks online( even both the disk replaced too) and were able to activate the VG and hence able to mount the file systems. But we were not able to start the Oracle DB because of control and data file corruption. So we tried to rstore the data thru SAP utility brrestore, but it is failing to restore the data. It is initmating for the next volume though our data is there in only one volume.
But when we tried to retsore the data thru cpio, we are able to restore the data, but we were not able to start the db as it indicates the data file corruption.

Need help badly..

Re: SAP / Oracle data restoration problem

General steps:

1) Get the disks you replaced back into the volume group if they were removed. strings /etc/lvmtab If the disks don't show, vgextend the volume group onto the disks.

2) You need to bring your database back to a cold restore point. That pretty much means the last time you shut down the database and did an OS or database utility backup. That is where you need to restore to.

If you can not do number 2, I can't see how you are going to bring the database back online.

The first rule of database disaster recovery is to have a backup that you are absolutely sure of. I have little confidence in your backup methodology based on your post.

Re: SAP / Oracle data restoration problem

Hi SEP

Thanks for the answer. Actually our Basis / Oracle DBAs have that backup up startergy. Anyhow,, can you clarify the following for me.

The backup taken thru SAP brbackup ( uses cpio internally) was not able to restore thru brrestore (uses cpio too), but able to restore thru cpio from unix prompt.
If done thru brbackup the drive hangs. We have changed teh drive, media, till the problem is there.

Any help

Re: SAP / Oracle data restoration problem

Hi Suraj,

I don't know how this brbackup (found this note about brbackup: http://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/ml2_documents.showDocument?p_database_id=NOT&p_id=62287.1) works but the first thing you should do is to know if those brbackups are COLD (database down) or HOT (database up) backups?

Re: SAP / Oracle data restoration problem

Hi,

That metalink note is a part of information refered in sections in the Legato Storage Manager Administrator's Guide, Part No. A58373-01.

Anyway, your problem seems serious. That's why I don't agree that HOT backups are always the best solution for all database environments...

What did you lost with that disks? Have you lose all controlfiles??

Re: SAP / Oracle data restoration problem

Hi,

first you need to check what is left:

Most likely you played around with cpio-blocksize parameters in your initSID.sap file and simply forgot to adjust the restore Parameters as well.

What SAP release are you on ?
Check with "brbackup -version".

Is /oracle/SID/920_64/dbs still available ?
If you have found the initSID.sap file there, please attach it.

Is /oracle/SID/sapbackup still available ?
You should find a logfile of the backup run you like to restore. Sort the logs in there by time. If you try to restore from an online backup the file should end with .ant and on .aft if the backup was made offline.

In the backup log should be a copy of the relevant parameters used for the backup and might give some indication which restore parameters might need adjustment.

Hope this helps
