Unable to install Oracle 8.0.6 on HP102

I have pfs mounted an oracle 8.0.6 CD for our dba group to install on a HP 9000/813 running 10.20 using the pfs mount instructions contained in document KBAN00000197 on the knowledge base. The dba tried to launch the install and received the following message:

oracle@dmc17% ./orainst
A problem occurred with the Oracle Installer. Try reinstalling it from original ORACLE distribution media. Or, you can provide the following message to Support to debug the problem:
User Interface Failure: Window System Startup
Result: User Interface Failure: Window System Startup

I've tried the following:
running orainst from XWindows
export TERM=hp (& vt220)
export ORACLE_TERM=hp (& vt220)

nothing has worked so far. Any other suggestions? I have a call open with oracle, but could take awhile to get response.

We install from a telnet session-
start X-window emulator and-
export DISPLAY=:0.0

Re: Unable to install Oracle 8.0.6 on HP102

Hi:

A few simple tests first:

After you export DISPLAY and run a telnet session, does something like xclock or xterm run? If so, your DISPLAY is setup. If I remember correctly, you need to run orainst under hpterm with TERM set to hp and with ORACLE_TERM set to hp as well. In the worst case, you should still be able to install using the character interface - just leave off the \m. The character interface still worlks under 8.0.6 but 8.1.x requires the GUI.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

my display variable is set. I can run/display/use SAM without issue.

Re: Unable to install Oracle 8.0.6 on HP102

Hello TD;

when you write that you can run SAM you do that BEFORE (or AFTER) su-ing to oracle, right?
Hence the user "oracle" still might not have set this variable, and/or might not have PERMISSION to show a window on your (i.e. "root") display!
execute "xhost +" before doing the "su - oracle", export the DISPLAY variable and THEN start teh installer.
