Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

Hi,

HP-UX 11.0 MC/SG 11.09
Oracle 8.0.6 OVO 6.14.

We are planning to upgrade
Oracle 8.0.6 to Oracle 8.1.7.

Are there any issues?
Is there any advice you can give us?

10 points to any good answer.
Thank you
Gino

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

Gino,

We have Oracle 8.1.7 running in the MC/SG two-node cluster.
We did the upgrade from 8.1.6 to 8.1.7 a while ago. Your upgrade should be similar to mine since it is a minor version upgrade too. Again, you can use the rolling upgrade mentioned in the MC-SG document to upgrade Oracle on an idle node first; relink all oracle programs, failover the database; upgrade the Oracle on the other node; relink all oracle executable on this node.

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

Just a reminder, Oracle 8.1.7 installer must be started on a GUI.

Just did a Oracle upgrade from 8.6.0-32bit last week to 8.1.7-64bit running on a SAP system. Any chance of your system running SAP? In our case our ORACLE_HOME was changed from /oracle/ to /oracle//817_64.

Are you running OmniBack? We had a problem running OB because of the Oracle home.

Did not encounter any problem with MCSG because we did not need to add any new filesystems.

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

To add to my previous, our installer hung at 94%.

This can happen if you select the 'Oracle Protocol Support' to install. When it hangs do a ps -ef |grep swlist and you will see a process running swlist (This may not appear before the installation). Do a kill -9 on this process (as root user) and the installation will continue.

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

Carry out test upgrade procedure on test env first:
1. Backup whole environment on 8063
2. Check pre-req
("Ensure:
- 8.0.6 patchset : 8.0.6.3 applied
- OWS patch 1673924 : Solaris only (if applicable)
- AR.D or later (already in AR.E)(if applicable)
- reserve at least 1.2G for 817 install
- remember to recompile all invalid objects
"
)
2.Create a new Oracle 8.1.7 software owner, and login the database
3.From the 817 CD staging area, issue "runInstaller" to start the installation process
4.Install Oracle 8.1.7 software
5.Apply 8.1.7.4 patchset (2376472)
6."Apply patch 2401670 for 8.1.7.4
(ORA-1002 AFTER ROLLBACK-TO-SAVEPOINT IN PRO*C OR OCI APPLICATION)"
7.Prepare new parameter files
change owner of /oradata to oracle
8.Direct upgrade database to 8.1.7
9.Customize the TNS parameters
10.Upgrade Intermedia Text to 8.1.7
11.Start database listener
12.Apply apps 8i interop patch 1239901(if applicable)
13."Compile any invalid objects
"
14.Turn on ARCHIVELOG mode
15.Enable job scheduling
16.Restart APPS

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

We installed Oracle 8.1.7 over a year ago. Make sure you have the latest HP patches as mentioned in the Oracle DOC.

We did not have a stable product until I patched Oracle from 8.1.7 to 8.1.7.4. We are running both the 32 bit and the 64 bit version.

We had some Perl DBI issues which was fixed by installing the latest version of Perl and reading some of the forums tips.

Good Luck

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

Gino,

Remember to apply any 8.1.7 Oracle patches right after installing Oracle 8.1.7.

Re: Upgrade Oracle to 8.1.7.

A few things to look out for.

1) http://metalink.oracle.com has a list of patches that MUST be installed prior to the database. The database will install if they are missing but will not work properly.

2) If this involves 32 bit to 64 bit data conversion, I'm attaching a doc on the subject.

3) Memory allocation in the kernel is important. You need to follow Oracle's guidelines but not treat them like the holy grail. On a number of occaisions Oracle techs directed us to raise the shmmax parameter to a level beyond usefulness.

shmmax can not be more than 25% of available memory which is defined as physical memory plus swap. swapinfo -tam will give you the figures you need. Oracle 8.1.7 is a heavy user of shared memory resources, just because 8.0.6 worked doesn't mean 8.1.7 will.

4) Go for the most patched Oracle 8.1.7 release. 8.1.7.0.0 will install and work, but there are some issues worked out by 8.1.7.4.0 and you are better off in the Oracle 8 world by being there immmediately after upgrade.
