Why an ORACLE listener needs running /usr/sbin/lanscan ?

Hi

After removing setUID of /usr/sbin/lanscan I found that an ORACLE listener cannot start up ?

What does an ORACLE listener need execute /usr/sbin/lanscan command ?

I guess it does a basic check by running the lanscan to see if the network interface is UP or not and there after runs the listener service. Also dont remove the setUID or SetGID of any files in /usr/bin or usr/sbin
other wise it will effect other applications too.

When client programs are invoked on HP-UX, the hardware address is obtained by using "lanscan".
It has to have the setUID permissions.
Else things wont work!!

hi,

lanscan is a fairly harmless command (if not used every millisecond), so no reason to remove SETUID.

Lanscan is used by Oracle to get the hardware addresss.

There were issues with lanscan on Oracle 8.0.x (bug 869343 & bug 1201812).

Basically, lanscan allows the hardware address to be obtained when invoking a client connection. The listener uses it!
