anyone seen this oracle error ORA-00472

ORA-00472: PMON process terminated with error

I know, check metalink, but Oracle support has struck out on two tries and 6 business days here.

Database will not shut down on HP-UX 11.11(11i)

We thought it was triggered by a java patch from HP but the problem is coming up on servers that were not patched.

Oracle 8.1.7.3 64 bit. HP-UX 11.11 December or July Patch set(as in both)

Steve

Re: anyone seen this oracle error ORA-00472

Hi Steve,

I searched SAP-NET:

ORA 47* usually is a followup error.
Check the alertlog, if an additional (other) error occurs right before the 0047*. (Note 541695)

An other one says Veritas Cluster is fireing "kill -9" in error (Note 308880)

I have two Notes suggesting nfiles and ninode Kernelparameter beinig too small (which sounds most likely to mee) (Note 9748 and 37347).

To check, do a
sar -v 1 10
and if the used/max ratio is high, go for higher values.

Check if you have trace-files, which give you further information.

Hope this helps
Volker

Re: anyone seen this oracle error ORA-00472

FYI:

root@openview:/root # oerr ora 00472
00472, 00000, "PMON process terminated with error"
// *Cause: The process cleanup process died
// *Action: Warm start instance
root@openview:/root #

I have no experience with this but thought I'd post the error detail.

Re: anyone seen this oracle error ORA-00472

Go and check the trace files for that process. It should give you some info on what is happening..remember..the trace file may also point you to another background process. You may need to follow the path until you get back to the original/root process that could have initiated the failure.

Just a thought,

Re: anyone seen this oracle error ORA-00472

Hi,

This is general error better check PMON alert log.
if still cannot find anyhing
add this:
event = "472 trace name context forever,level 2"
to init.ora then start instance.
next error will give you more information in alert and PMON log.
enjoy any little thing in my life
