But may be from where it was compiled, this directory had a link pointing to some system one.

Thus got subsituted later on.

to me this library should be located in $ORACLE_HOME/lib

did you rebuild libclntsh.sl.9.0 recently ?
what value did you have for ORACLE_HOME ?

these depend a lot on the environment variables and how they were relinked..
