hp support - what are my options?

I've been assigned the role of system admin of our HP 9000 servers. It is a small company and we have no support contract for our machines. The hardware has been running for several years and seems pretty solid. I am concerned as to how I can get updates, patches, software, etc so we continue to run with minimal downtime.

We have K460 servers with AutoRAID 12H arrays.

I am working on a list of priorities.

1. mirror vg00. currently it is on one internal 4GB disk.

2. support plus. get a subscription to the cd-rom updates.

The HP maintenance and support cost is not in the budget.

Can someone give me contact info for HP to inquire about a Mirrordisk/UX license and software updates?

Re: hp support - what are my options?

A software support contract is your best bet to accomplish what you want.

The pricing varies a lot but is usually a few thousand dollars per year per machine.

You can squeeze the money out of almost any budget. Hardware support is where a lot of money gets burned up. The older the machine, the more HP charges for support. If the hardware is too old, you can't buy support.

To do items 1 and 2 you need a software support contract. Mirror/UX is an add on product that costs several thousand dollars.

You best buy is to buy the Enterprise Bundle(Not mission critical). It runs about $4,000 per CPU.

Here is a link.

Re: hp support - what are my options?

I've been trying to navigate all the HP phone numbers to find someone that knows what options I have.

Tim,

If you do not know who your local sales rep is, I'd start with the Advantage Center at: 1-800-637-7740. They can at least explain some of your options and get you headed in the right direction for what fits your company's needs. Happy to help out if you have any questions I can answer. I don't have specific knowledge of contracts but think this would be a good starting point.

Tim,

One more thing, if you don't get the information you're looking for, email me at eric.schmidt2@hp.com and I can get an HP sales rep. in contact with you to help out.

Re: hp support - what are my options?

Eric's going to take care of you, get you in touch with a rep.

I would add a note of advice though. Administering a complex HP-UX system is not like running another Windows Server. It can easily be a full time job.

To do it properly you can reasonably justify some training. Network and Systems Admin I and II at the very least.

Good luck and don't hesitate to post more questions. While not a substitute for HP support these forums have allowed me to cut my call volume.

Re: hp support - what are my options?

Hi, Tim:

I am HP-UX system admin too,and I have some suggestion for you:

1. get the server OS version first, using following command:
uname -a
If the version is HP-UX 10.20,as my knowledge HP may be out of suport for this version.(that means hp don't release OS or software patches or support plus) If you consider to sign support contract with HP,HP will recommand you do the OS upgrade plan.

2. get all software list on K460 server, using following command:
swlist -v >/tmp/swlist.txt
vi /tmp/swlist.txt

3. consider any ap or database migration plan if OS version upgrde.

4.mirrordisk/UX is an option Add-on software.

5.you can consider HP's HW support and SW support(including Response Center support) service contract and I thing you already got the HP contact window.

best regards,
