oracle_link directory

I am about to install Oracle7.3.4 on HP UX 10.2, as I have never seen an installation before - I have a doubt on the installation instructions(pl see below) : i.e what is the oracle_link directory mentioned in Step 4 of the instructions below ? Is this the directory on which the CD ROM is mounted ? Many thanks

Instructions
---------------
1. Log in as the oracle software owner.
2. Change to the orainst directory on the CD-ROM:
$ cd /SD_CDROM/orainst
3. Make sure ORACLE_TERM is set to the appropriate value. (If set
incorrectly, your Installer screen display and function keys may not
function properly.) To check the value for ORACLE_TERM, enter:
$ echo $ORACLE_TERM
See Also: ├в Set Environment Variables├в on page 3 ├в 14 for a list
of ORACLE_TERM settings.
4. Enter the oracle_link directory name when prompted.
5. Start the Installer:
In Motif mode:
$ ./orainst /m
or
$./ora

Re: oracle_link directory

Not very sure but could be the mount point of filesystem made for Oracle.

Re: oracle_link directory

I don't remember V7. That's soooo long ago!?
Any change to get with something more recent if you are just starting?!

Anyway, I just hit google for
"+oracle_link +directory" and it returns several useful hints. Just one example:

http://www.paradyne.com/technical_manuals/7800-A2-GN10-00.pdf

This contains:
----------
6. Create Oracle directory.
NOTE:
This should be done under the file system where you would like the
Oracle to be installed. This file system must have approximately
300 megabytes of free hard disk space.
├в Example: mkdir /home/oracle
For installation on HP platforms only:
Create directory called ├в oracle_link├в with approximately 100 megabytes
of free disk space.
├в Example: mkdir /home/oracleexport dba
ORACLE_HOME=/home/oraclechown oracle $ORACLE_HOMEchgrp
$ORACLE_HOMEchmod 755 $ORACLE_HOME
If not present, create a local bin directory: /usr/local/bin. Ensure
that this directory is included in every user├в s path.

Re: oracle_link directory

As I remember, when installing oracle 7.0.X - 7.2.X, we must create the /oracle_link directory and create a link farm. To create the oracle_link directory and set the correct permissions:
# mkdir /oracle_link
# chmod 777 /oracle_link
# chown oracle /oracle_link
# chgrp dba /oracle_link

Re: oracle_link directory

Hi,

I think this may be the answer to your question:

1. What is the oracle_link or olink directory? Some operating systems cannot read the ORACLE CD-ROM because the CD-ROM is in ISO_9660 format with the Rockridge extension. The "start.sh" script creates a link farm so that the filenames appear as normal.

Re: oracle_link directory

Add to above, to create the Link-Farm.
1. logout root and login as oracle.
2. make sure that . is in path:
$ echo $PATH
if no, do:
$ export PATH=$PATH:.
3. set file creation permissions:
$ umask 022
4. make sure that your ORACLE_TERM variable is properly set:
$ env | grep ORACLE_TERM
If no, do:(
$ export ORACLE_TERM=
5. create the Link-Farm as follows:
$ cd /cdrom/orainst
$ ./start.sh*
6. when the start.sh script asks for name of the link directory, specify /oracle_link

Good Luck!

Re: oracle_link directory

Hi George,

Some operating systems cannot read the ORACLE CD-ROM because the
CD-ROM is in ISO_9660 format with the Rockridge extension. The "start.sh" script creates a link farm so that the filenames appear as normal. This is what meant by Oracle_link directory.

Not all platforms use the oracle_link directory. Check your the Installation and Configuration Guide for your operating system for verification of the use of the oracle_link directory.

This directory is created manually and then the "start.sh" script is run from the CD-ROM and sets up the link farm. If your platform does not use the oracle_link directory, the "start.sh" script is not needed.

It is recommended that you delete the link directory after the installation. Also, anytime you dismount the CD-ROM, you need to delete and recreate the oracle_link directory.

I Hope this helps.

Re: oracle_link directory

One more thing: you have do copy the entire CD to this directory you created on your server and run Installer from it!

Re: oracle_link directory

Thanks for all your help- But I am still a bit confused- The manual onyl says about starting the installer using the command ./orainst /c and does not mention about .start.sh* - What do you suggest ?
I have attached the relevant section of the manual below.
Also does any one of you have a good link to an Installation guide for Oracle 7.3.4 on HP UX 10.2 ?

or

Note: You must set your DISPLAY environment variable to
nodename:0.0 before running the Motif version of Oracle
Installer.
In character mode:
$ ./orainst /c

Re: oracle_link directory

Did you already mounted the CD? Do you see the files correctly after that are they appear as for exemple: FILENAME.1 ?

If you can see the files on the CD normally try to find where is the start.sh and see what happens!
