select with wild card?

I am trying to get a select statement working with TOAD.
I thought the % is a wild card, but when I run it I get nothing in return where I know I should.

select * from table
where bld = '%floor'


Am I doing it right?

The _ is a wildcard for any single character.

what if it is more than one charecter.
