server crashed informix in recovery state.

Hey everone,
We had a server shutdown today. It was running an informix engine. I dont know much about informix so I dont know many details all I know is that it is in "recovery" state. Does anyone have any tips on this type of issue. I was told by my DB people that all we can do is wait. And that it could take 1 hour or 1 week to get it back up. We are running Informix 9.30.

Thanks,
Richard

Re: server crashed informix in recovery state.

they are correct about waiting it out, but you should be able to get a better guesstimate on the time.

here's the informix support page at IBM:

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/data/informix/support/

there are white papers, faqs, and links the the informix user group's page that has more info.

HTH, good luck,

Re: server crashed informix in recovery state.

Try the informix command "onmode -m" to bring the database to multi-user state. This sometimes works for us.

Nb - "onmode -?" will lists other options.

Re: server crashed informix in recovery state.

Hey thanks for the posts. Everything came up yesterday around 5pm. So it was not that bad. But for me it was mainly the feeling of not being able to do something about it. I am a very reactive person and if something goes down and crashes I like working on it till it comes up. Just sitting waiting is not my cup of tea. But in this biz sounds like I will have to calm down a little and be more patient.

Hi Richard,

Yes, patience is a virtue.
Especially valuable when you don't have "control" as in this case
And it's a learned skill - you'll get better at it.
Just remember "Don't sweat the small stuff - and it's ALL small stuff."
Cheers & have a great day!

Re: server crashed informix in recovery state.

Richard,

next time check with onstat -D.

you'll see read and writes on your dbspaces. This tells you at least that INFORMIX is still working on recovering and not just hanging.
