Personalize your path to DevOps with e-learning

The answer lies in the fact that DevOps presents a significant learning curve for developers and operations personnel, and e-learning can play a vital role in getting them up to speed. Whether a change involves process, technology, or culture—or, in the case of DevOps, all three—e-learning can give people a personalized path to understanding the new concepts that are critical to a successful DevOps transformation.

Here’s how corporate training used to work: You spent a week in a class, and you came back with a mountain of notes—and a mountain of emails and voicemails that had piled up from all the work you missed. Two weeks later, you kind of remembered what you learned…well, maybe half of it. The rest was a blur, either because it just didn’t apply to you, or because your brain was stuffed with too much information for a normal person to remember.

That kind of training, where you go in-depth and do almost nothing but sit in a classroom for days, is still a standard practice in many organizations. But it’s becoming less common, partly because it isn’t practical for topics that involve technical and cultural change like DevOps. In addition, just as DevOps poses cultural challenges, today’s learners have different ideas about what training should be. Millennials—who get most of their information via mobile devices—aren’t interested in sitting a classroom for days on end, learning face-to-face from a trainer.

The rise of micro-content

Fortunately, mobile technology also makes better solutions possible. We’re seeing more and more organizations turn to micro-content, which enables people to do targeted training on their phones, tablets, or laptops—in smaller chunks and from wherever they are.

Say you’re waiting for a flight at the airport and have only 30 minutes to spare, so you want the ability to consume educational content that has been packaged for exactly that amount of time—and still know that you’ll come away having learned something useful.

Or perhaps your work involves only a particular aspect of a subject, and it would be a waste of time to be trained on other areas. Or, like so many of us these days, you’re operating in an environment of change, and you need to train for those changes. Micro-content can deliver exactly the information you need to perform your role, and it can give you the freedom to learn on your own terms, without disrupting your regular work.

Organizations that are transforming to a DevOps culture need to operate at a faster pace than traditional training methods allow. E-learning combines the flexibility and agility you need to prepare developer and operational teams as quickly and efficiently as possible.
