Smart lamp posts. And, Nest is going for an open approach to home automation

Smart devices are gaining pace - Chicago plans for smart lamp posts that measure air polution, noise polution and  pedestrians.  The FastCompany article is here.  There are concerns about the pedestian tracking part of this announcement.

And Nest, makers of smoke and CO2 alams have released an API to their devices. I think that this is good - it means that we may have just one unit managing the smart home, rather than one unit per smart device manufacturer.  The article below describes how a smart light manufacturer will make their lights flash red when the NEST alarm goes off.

The Financial Times article on Nest is here (you may need a free FT subscription to view this).

The FT predicts that the battle for the home automation market (or, more specifically, the "operating system" at the center of the home automation market) will hot up next week at Google I/O. Apple has already announced its HomeKit, and Google is expected to counter this.
