ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

The ARMServer process just stops on both our servers. This started happening after upgrade from 11.0 to 11.11. Anyone else had a problem like this. We also run OMNIback on our production server and OMNIBack will stop at the same time ARMServer (hparray) stops. Nothing in the syslog. I just start the process back. This is happening intermittently.

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

When you say you upgraded from 11 .00 to 11i, do you mean you took the upgrade option, or installed from scratch? Did you use the Sept 2001 install bundle?

Also, have you gone to the Custom Patch Manager to see if there are any patches you need?

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

try the command logprint and/or arraylog

You might also want to install the latest scsi and spt drivers.

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

We did an upgrade. We installed the July 2001 patch set. Since then I installed a patch for the ARMServer. HP stated the patch resolved timeouts. We did install the hardware patches through July. Seems like I looked and there were not any patches for scsi but I will look again.
I appreciate your comments and if you think of anything else, let me know. I can't believe more people on 11.11 are not having this same problem.

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

Hi,

Also look at cleaning up your logs.

Here's the procedure.

Stop ARMserver daemon by issuing the following command.
View the logs looking for errors for say the past week if required.
# /opt/hparray/bin/logprint -s 032000002001 (mmddhhmmyyyy)
# /sbin/init.d/hparray stop
If necessary backup the log files to another filesystem or tape. Once this has been completed you can remove everything in the directory. Make doubly sure you are in the correct directory, (/var/opt/hparray/log).
# rm *
Use rm -i if there are only a few files.
Create a new LOGCATLG file.
# touch LOGCATLG
Restart the ARMserver daemon
# /sbin/init.d/hparray start

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

Hi,

These are the patches that would apply
in your case.

PHCO_23150 HP Array
PHCO_23263 AutoRaid
PHKL_24031 PDC Call retry fix,PDC_SCSI_PARMS support
PHKL_24391 Support for PREFETCH_LOCK for I/O chipsets
PHKL_24441 SCSI IO Subsystem
PHKL_25020 SCSI Ultra 160 Driver
and their dependancies. Also suggest you look
at the latest firmware for your server.

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

It's also possible that the f/w version on your autoraid is not valid for the ARMServer patch installed.

This has been a common pb I've seen.
Upgrade the ARMServer PHCO and either the ARMServer doesn't start or it starts but does nothing.

Check your f/w revision from the control panel of the array under View Settings.

The last I worked with an autoraid was around the time of HP60 and HP62 f/w.
Upgrading from HP56 always required a PHCO upgrade on the server.

You can use the /opt/hparray/bin/download command to d/l the new f/w to the controllers.. probably safer getting a CE to do it. At least make sure that no luns are in use while you do.

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

Thanks to all who responded.
This is happening on both our production and development servers. Also, on our production server we run OMNIBack. At the same time the ARMServer stops, so does OMNIBack. We do not run OMNIBack on the development server, so only ARMServer has timedout or stopped. I will look in to the patches, firmware question, but it's odd that its ARMSERVER and OMNIBack together. Yes, I've had to clean up the ARMServer logs on both systems every time the process dies.

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

put up an output of
ioscan -fnk

The armserver script will run one.. and launch if it detects a lun 0.
Is lun 0 configured?

Re: ARMServer process for HPSureStore 12H STOPS

Yes, LUN 0 is configured.
Bill, I didn't understand what you meant by:
"The armserver script will run one.. and launch if it detects a lun 0." Will run one what?

Thanks
