Jim,
appologies for the incomplete information on diskpart. I tried it out and got the exact same error as you.
Booting Windows into 'safe mode with command prompt' and running diskpart from their gave no error on the extend command and all was ok as of then.
To clarify i ran the test twice but scrapped the array in between the two steps (so no diskprobe stuff).

Jim I have the same problem few month ago.
The only way is with diskpart.
DO NOT upgrade to dinamic, second partition will not expand because it was created when the disk is basic.
If the W2K server is a domain controller, you must use diskpart in "AD restore mode", but this method only allow you to expand partitions with continuous space, so probable you can expand only the last partition.
