Array Recovery

Hi,
We have SW4314(146x10 GB Hard disks) installed with ML370G3 via smart array 642 and OS was windows 2003 server.Hardware base RAID 5 was configured.recently we had one hard drive failure in this storage and RAID was in interim recovery mode.we replaced the faulty drive with the new one but the hard drive LED remained in RED status.2 72 GB hard drives were also connected with this 642 internal port and were in RAID1 configuration.we had to reinstall OS and now windows 2000 advance server with service pack4 is installed on the local storage RAID1 disk.Now after installing the new OS we are unable to retrieve the old data that was residing on the storage works 4314.The hardware based RAID configuration is intact if we check via RAID configuration utility at POST level.But this hardware based raid is not accessible at the OS level.Although this disk is shown at the disk management menu but is reported as unallocated space.
Now we need your support in recovering this RAID configuration.we would really appericiate if you can update us urgently as this storage is connected with a critical server and we need to resolve this issue promptly.Please do let us know if further info is required.

Asim,

I didn't quite follow how your arrays are configured, but it may be that you need to manually tell the controller the proper array to add the replaced disk. The controller may just be sitting there waiting for you to tell it what to do with the disk.

Of course, this only makes sense if you can see the disk as unallocated in the hardware config utility as well as in the OS config utility.

Yes, you have written this in a quite complex manor.
So you replaced a failed drivein a 10x 146GB array RAID5. And either the drive was accepted and was rebuilding OR the drive was not accepted and was still listed failed. Unfortunately that is where the story ends for you replacement drive.
NOW you speak of 2 72GB drives. Did you just add them? Always There? weren't accessable either when you did this work to them? Why did you do this install?

Are you getting any error messages from the array controller at POST? When you added the new 72G drives, did you move the external cable from port 1 to port 2? I don't think this array controller will allow you to have internal and external connections on the same SCSI port. When you move the cable to port 2, all data should be intact.

Another thing to look at is in W2k Admin Tools, Disk Management. Is the RAID5 configured as a Dynamic disk or as a Basic disk? I don't think a 2003 dynamic disk can be read by W2k.
