Can I expand my raid 5?

Can I expand my raid 5?

I have an hp surestore system 2100 with 3 disks in raid 5.
The volume group created on these disks is near to fill up.
I would know if it's possible to insert the fourth disk in the system to expand the raid an so the volume group.
Thanks.

Re: Can I expand my raid 5?

Hello,

Since the ds2100 is a JBOD disk array, what kind of RAID controller is attached to it?

I dont think it will work becuase the raid 5 group sort of stripes itself over the 3 disks you have in it and you cant just add a 4th on the fly - this is normally configured when you first bind/create the raid5 group. Extending an existing raid5 group is normally not possible without wiping the group and having to recreate it (losing your data).
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

Re: Can I expand my raid 5?

Hi
If it not is possible to extend the Raid-set witout recreating (and destroying data) it should be possible to create a new Raid-set and extend the volume group (without destroying any data). But this needs 3 (or more) extra disks.
