Compatibility of 7200 RPM disk in place of 10K RPM in Auto Raid 12H

Dear All,

One of the HDD in Auto Raid AR-12H had failed
and the disk details are,

Single Ended SCSI 9.1 GB 10K RPM , Hot Swappable Disk Module

We have the spare Disk, which is Single Ended SCSI 9.1 GB 7200 RPM
hot swappable Disk Module.

Can someone confirm whether will this Disk work in the Raid Box?

Totall no of Disks in AR : 4 numbers.

Presently it is working with 3 numbers.
(RAID-5)

Hi,

Your original disk is part# A3713-69001, the 7200 rpm disk is part# A3703-69001 (make sure it's not an "ordinary" disk, the disk should have the correct firmware to be suitable for an autoraid 12H).
The user manual states that you can mix disks of different capacities (it does not state anything about the rotational speed).

I have a sneaking hunch that the access speed for that volume will drop to the speed of the slowest disk, i.e. 7200. Look for a drop in throughput to this volume.

Replacing the failed disk with 7200RPM disk module would definitly work on the AutoRAID but there is one thing to be considered, which is performance issue.
In the manual, mixing disk modules with different RPMs inside the array will degrade performance to some extent.
So place a hardware suport call to HP to get the right one with the same specification on the AutoRAID.

One more thing is that your disk array is now in an unstable state which means that if you lost one more disk module on the AutoRAID, you would probably lose your whole data.

In the case that you don't agree support maintenance with HP, you'd better put the 7200RPM module temporary on the array and take the right action later.

Yes it works fine.
having less than 4 disks in the autoraid is really
not good. You could loose data if
the rebuild failed..
do
arraydsp -i
to get the serial number
and arraydsp
to get your data status.
I didn't think you could order less than 36G drives any
more though... if you're going to get a 36G 10rpm drive
make sure that you got the 10krpm fans (plastic bubble
fan sticker) and that you add in at least two.

If you search for AutoRAID Capacity Planning tool
from the search on hp.com you will find how much data
storage you can have.

Disk Firmware shouldn't be an issue, once you've got
later controller firmware that is.

you get the firmware info from
arraydsp -c
there is a HP62 out now.
