DL320 G5 connecting to MSA 500 G2 - SAS or SATA internal HDDs?
Hi All
We are considering investing in a new file server and I have been looking at the MSA 500 G2 in combination with a DL320 G5.
I have looked at the Quickspec and it is a bit confusing.
The MSA 500 G2 comes with two SA-642 which I assume I have to install (one of them) in the DL320 to get access to disks on the MSA.
So to the confusing part:
Can I configure the DL320 G5 with SAS disks then? It says I have to install an optional SAS controller so will I be able to install that (and which one) in addition to the SA-642 (which requires the optional PCI-X Riser (at least from what I understood).
Or should I rather go for the DL360 G5 with the DL360 G5 PCI-X conversion kit (405154-B21)?
Some advice would be great.
Thanks.
/Thomas

Re: DL320 G5 connecting to MSA 500 G2 - SAS or SATA internal HDDs?
Hi, MSA500 G2 is a SCSI enclosure and needs to be connected to a SmartArray 642 or 6400. These controllers are PCI-X so you need to change the PCI raiser on DL320 G5 or DL360 G5.
The DL320 G5 comes with an SATA controller, to use SAS disks you need to add a SAS controller.
The DL360 G5 comes with a SmartArray E200 which supports SAS and SATA disks.
The servers will then use the internal controllers for the internal disks, and the SmartArray 642/6400 for the disks on the MSA.

Re: DL320 G5 connecting to MSA 500 G2 - SAS or SATA internal HDDs?
Thanks for your reply.
So the DL320 G5 can hold both a SA-642 (PCI-X card full height) and a SAS controller (which possibly is a half height PCIe card)?
From the available options, I could find any SAS controller (PCIe half height) that can support the internal 2xSAS disks in this DL320 G5.
I actually found that SA-P400i might work. The question is if there is room for the battery pack as well?
Some thoughts?
