DL380 Raid1 array expansion when upgrading with bigger disks

Hi
I've got a DL380 G3 server, smart array 5300.
My system has been built with 2 36,4 Gb disks in RAID 1.
I've created only one partition thus 37 GB with windows 2000 : in BAsic mode under windows Disk Management

I've replaced one of the 36,2 with a 72,8 Gb disks. The RAID 1 has rebuilt with the same 37 Gb RAID 1 partition.

How can I expand this partition to 72 Gb : every solution can be explored (partition magic, disk miraculous expansio, tricky method...)

thanks in advance for any shared experience.

Mathieu:

You have to replace the second drive. A Smart Array controller will not allow you to ustilize the extra space until all the drives in the array are the same.

With that being said, once you have all the disks replaced, you will need to use a 3rd party utility to extend the "C:" drive. Before you attempt this, you will need to extend the logical drive from within ACU (Array Config Utility) first.

See here for a very recent post about a similar situation...

Re: DL380 Raid1 array expansion when upgrading with bigger disks

thanks Steven
as referring to the other post , here is my first update on my works :

quote from other post : "Diskpart will ONLY work on a partition where the logical drive does NOT contain an OS/Boot partition."

actually it works, i've used it to extend a RAID1 partition that I had migrated from 36,4 Gb to 72,8 Gb and then extend with ACU.

platform : DL380 G3 with windows 2000.

is there the opposite tool from microsoft to separate partitions ?

You said...

"i've used it to extend a RAID1 partition that I had migrated from 36,4 Gb to 72,8 Gb and then extend with ACU."

Did this logical drive contain your "C:" drive? or the drive where your OS lives?

I am not aware of any tool from microsoft that can be used to separate partitions. For the most part, I am not even sure that what your asking is doable. How do you want to "separate partitions"? Can you explain more?

Re: DL380 Raid1 array expansion when upgrading with bigger disks

@Steven :

yes this is where the C: is.

about "cutting" partitions, this is one of the possibilities in the software "Partition magic" where you can separate one partition in 2 - just as long as you feel confident enough in not losing any data :-)

I wondered if something equivalent existed by Microsoft.

Thats what I thought you meant, just wanted to make sure.

I am not awaye of any other software from Microsoft that is like Partition Magic. You would think that by now, they would have produced some, or at least bought some and modified it.
