Deleting LUN ID 0 on a VA7100

Why do I get the message "Deleting LUN ID 0 may make the array inaccessible. Press OK to continue with the deletion." ?

Re: Deleting LUN ID 0 on a VA7100

It is through LUN0 that the Operating system sees the array. It is through this LUN that the OS commands like armdsp, armcfg, works.

Re: Deleting LUN ID 0 on a VA7100

Because in SCSI-3 protocol it is standard behaviour to ask the storage array what LUNs the array provides. This is done by sending a "REPORT LUNS" command to the storage array's LUN #0.

Fibre Channel can deal with _many_ LUNs, so it does not make sense to poll for them indvidually. Some operating systems expect a LUNs address space without any hole in them - else, when should they stop with polling?

Re: Deleting LUN ID 0 on a VA7100

My situation is this...I want to increase the size of LUN 0, but it seems I must first delete the LUN and then create a new LUN to acheive this. Will I have to start from scratch if I delete LUN 0 ?

Re: Deleting LUN ID 0 on a VA7100

Why do you want to make it larger? LUN 0 on the VA7xx0 should be on the smallest size possible and not used to store any data.

Thanks for your responses Uwe and Naveej. You've cleared things up for me.
