EVA5000 and host connections settings

We have a old EVA5000 with vcs 3110. What host mode should be used for Netware?

"Unknown", really.

Re: EVA5000 and host connections settings

In ESX 4.0 (EVA 5000 is probably not qualified) Should I use fixed path with Path A/B failover/failback on the luns or should I use mru with Preferred path/mode: no preference?

Re: EVA5000 and host connections settings

Fixed is for Active/Active arrays, only.
Use MRU.

Re: EVA5000 and host connections settings

In best practice document for HP, I find this:

Configuration best practices for HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array (EVA) family and VMware vSphere 4

In vSphere 4, round robin load balancing is now officially supported along with Most Recently Used (MRU) and Fixed I/O path policies

Re: EVA5000 and host connections settings

Yes, but RR requires an ALUA-compliant active/active array.

If you run it against an active/passive EVA you can *C-R-A-S-H* the EVA !!

Re: EVA5000 and host connections settings

I understand, but for me it sounds more logical to use fixed path on the EVA5000. If you set mru and use this lun setting, Preferred path/mode: no preference.
Then I thought the ESX severs would use only one port for all i/o traffic.

Re: EVA5000 and host connections settings

MRU will use one port, too.

If you use multiple ESX servers with "fixed" on an active/passive array, there is a high change that you get "path thrashing" when one server experience a failure on its active path.

Ok, should the lun setting be like this:
Preferred path/mode: no preference?

"If you use multiple ESX servers with "fixed" on an active/passive array, there is a high change that you get "path thrashing" when one server experience a failure on its active path"

If the active path fail, the other hba can do i/o to the same EVA controller through the other EVA port on the same controller, so I don't understand how this can cause path trashing.
