We have a EVA 5000 that no longer under any service agreement with HP.
What we would like to do, is upgrade the firmware of the Disks and Controllers.
The current version we are on is VCS 3.025 which means we need to upgrade to VCS 3.028 and then to VCS 4.01
The things I need to know are the following:
1. Where can i get the firmware for both the HDDs and VCS?
2. Is there any documentation for the actual upgrade (step by step) both for controllers and disks
3. Does the actual disk enclosure also need upgrading?
4. How many people actually tried this?
Thanks

Re: EVA5000 firmware upgrade
Only HP can update the VCS firmware.

SolutionFirstly, you probably want to be upgrading to VCS 3.110 rather than 4.01. This is the latest stable version 3 release. Version 4 introduces Active/Active controllers which probably isn't worth the hassle.
1. You'll find VCS 3028 here:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software5/COL11349/co-33573-1/EVA5000_VCS_3028.zip
VCS 3110 is here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3352089&prodTypeId=12169&prodSeriesId=321347&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=54
The latest hard drive firmware bundle is here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3351789&prodTypeId=329290&prodSeriesId=3302267&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=54
2. I'm not sure there's a public procedure anywhere, although it's not difficult.
3. The EMU in the enclosure gets upgraded at the end of the VCS upgrade.
4. Yes. I've done a few EVAs now without any problems...
Cheers,
Rob

Also, you don't mention what version of Command View EVA you're currently running. That may well require upgrading as well...

Re: EVA5000 firmware upgrade
1. Will version 3.110 support this? if not, what version do i need?
2. Do i need to upgrade the disks first?
3. I also have async CA replication to an EVA 3000. Will this cause problems that you might know of?
With the upgrade path I previously stated i know that I will also have to upgrade my EVA 3000. As i do not know this version i dont know what i need to do with the EVA 3000.

Re: EVA5000 firmware upgrade
1. I think you need to get up to at least Command View EVA 5. Version 6 would be better if you can, as that makes it easier to upgrade the drive firmware.
2. The latter versions of VCS and Command View, enable the disk firmware to be done 'online'. So upgrade VCS first.
3. I've never used CA so can't comment.
As VCS 3.028 is still supported you may want to just bring everything up to that version first. That will avoid the need to upgrade Command View...

Rob

Re: EVA5000 firmware upgrade
The only thing i need is the actual procedure and release notes for the VCS 3.028 upgrade.
I want to check that everything is the right version before I even think of getting started. (As you probably know this needs to be very well planned:) )

Re: EVA5000 firmware upgrade
Release notes for 3.028 are attached.
The procedure for upgrading is fairly straight forward.
If you click on the Code Load button then follow the prompts, it's pretty much self explanatory.
The controllers will both go offline during the upgrade, so you'll need to make sure the connected hosts are shutdown.
Cheers,
Rob
