Expand exising array Raid 5 in DL380
Hello,
Situation is as follows:
HP Proliant DL380 G5 server, Smart Array P400, with 6 (six physical drives) installed in total, of which:
2 (two physical drives) of 72GB in Raid 1+0 mirrored - Drive C used for Operation system;
4 (four physical drives) of 72GB in Raid 5 - Drive D used for saving files.
I want to add 1 (one physical drive) 72GB into the EXISTING Raid 5 (Drive D) Array to make more capacity.
There is no option in HP Array Configuration Utility (http://docs.hp.com/en/9320/acu.pdf), even though, they say: Expand Array and Extend Logical Drive on pages 24 and 25.
Please advice,
Georgi

Re: Expand exising array Raid 5 in DL380
Hello Georgi,
you need a BBWC attached to you P400 to do a online expansion. If you have a BBWC connected, you must add the physical disk to the array, and then you can expand the logical drive with the new free space.
There are some options, to attach a BBWC:
Smart Array P400 Battery Attach Kit 417836-B21
This option kit contains a 24" battery cable and adhesive material for installing a battery into the server if a Smart Array P400 is integrated outside of the factory. For all solutions, please refer to the server QuickSpecs and User's Manual for detailed installation instructions.
Battery-backed write cache upgrade
NOTE: For Smart Array P400 Controller only. 383280-B21
512MB Battery-backed cache upgrade
NOTE: For Smart Array P400 Controller only. 405148-B21
Best regarads,
Patrick

Re: Expand exising array Raid 5 in DL380
Thank you very much for your answer.
I'll be purchasing the hardware first and then I'll try to expand the array.
Sincerely,
Georgi
