Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

DL380 G4
Smart Array 6i
Netware 6
Smart Array Configuration 2.77

I had three 300 GB drives configured with RAID5. I added 2 more 300 GB drives. I told it expand, but when I was asked Y/N to continue, I told it no because I wanted to check the expand priority. It went ahead and started expanding regardless. Expansion is finally complete. It show that I have 5 drives, but it still lists only 572195 MB. Any idea how I can get that additional 600 GB? Or do I need to wipe the server and start fresh?

Regards,
Ken

Re: Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

hi

what you have to do is assign that unallocated space to your existing RAID

Sorry for this I'm not a Novell expert but this links ca help you to expand and to get the whole size

Re: Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

Hello Ken,

After You expand the Array, You need to Extend the Logical drive to use the Additional space.
Extend option is available once u select the Current Logical drive(to which u want to add space to);

OR, in case you dont want to increase the current logical drive; You can create another(new) Logical drive for your use.

Re: Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

Karlo,

You are missing the point. I made the drives part of my RAID. This isn't the first time I have done this. What I am saying is that the two new drives are now assigned to the array but the space is not there. Something went wrong.

Sujith,

What do you mean by "Extend the logical drive"? The Novell utility NSSMU says there is no free space to work with. The HP utility CPQONLIN tells me that I have a Smart Array 6i controller on slot 0 with SCSI Array A (nothing else). SCSI Array A contains 572195 MB, RAID 5 - Log Drive 1. If I look at the physical view, SCSI Array A contains five 300 GB drives. The controller thinks the two new drives are part of the array, it thinks it has expanded, but the space is not there and there are no commands to get that space.

Re: Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

Hello Ken,

U mean U dont see the additional space under NWCONFIG ??

Goto NWCONFIG to add the drive space to volume you wish to select. If you are unclear on what options to select under NWCONFIG you will need to contact Novell Support directly.

Or, U may Also use the CONSOLE to increase the Volume size.(at times NWCONFIG doesnt help)

Re: Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

James,

I am running NetWare 6/6.5. The volumes are NSS, not TFS. NWConfig does not apply. The utility for NSS volumes is NSSMU.

The space does not show up in NSSMU. And it does not show up there because it does not even show up in CPQONLIN!

Re: Expanded RAID5, but no additional space

James,

Ok. That is what I was trying to figure out. I needed to upgrade the OS anyway. I'll just pull it out of the tree, reconfigure it, and bring it back in with the new OS.

Ken
