FATA HDD For XP12000

Hello,

Does HP Support 500 GB FATA HDDs in XP12000?

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

HP does not and will not support FATA disks in the XP12000!

I suggest using either internal 300GB FC disks or a lower cost external array like an EVA with FATA disks or for low performance requirements MSA1500 with SATA disks.

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

Thank you Peter,

What is the requirement for connecting an EVA8000 to one XP storgae?
Should I have any additional port or pheripheral connection for connecting EVA to XP?
How does EVA connect to XP?

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

Hi Hasan

To connect external storage to the XP12000 you need:
1. FC ports (2 dedicated MPs min)
2. Externals Storage XP licenses (include the required Lun Security & Config licenses)

You can connect the EVA directly to the XP ports but it is recommended using a backend fabric (either dedicated switches, a dedicated VSAN or just dedicated zones within the server SAN)

If you would conncet your EVA8000 directly to the XP you can use up to 6 ports for it. 2 ports have to be connected to the Command View EVA server.

If using a backend fabric you can use all 8 ports!

See my attached drawings that show how External storage maps in the XP and 2 deployment options.

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

Thank you,

How will be the management?
Can I manage both EVAs and XP from one console with one software (Like CV XP) Or I need to have both CV EVA and CV XP for this issue?
How XP connect EVAs if I connect them both to SAN?
Is there any Vdisk created on EVAs? or EVA's HDD will act as XP's internal HDDs?

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

The EVA is managed by CV EVA.

Configuration steps for External Storage:
1. Create EVA LUN(s)
2. Present LUN(s) to XP. These LUNs now appear as XP Vdisks.
3. From now on everything is managed from the XP (Web Console or CV XP).
You can now create LDEVs, LUSE or CVS to be used as LUN or BC or CA volumes.

So actually a LUN from the the external EVA is like an Array Group inside the XP.

You need to make sure that the EVA is monitored and I also recommend ISEE installation to allow remote diag from HP.

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

Hello,

1.Is it possible to use XP just for management without any internal disk?
I mean can I connect EVAs to a XP1000 which does not has any HDDs?
2.What is different between CHIP and ACP port? Which one is required for connection external storage to XP?
3. Is it possible to have two "HP XP12000/10000 32 Port 4Gb FC CHIP" (AE023A) in one XP10000

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

You are very curious :-)

1. Yes this is possible
You can either order a diskless XP10000 or an SVS200.
Physically it is the same box but SW and support bundling as well as licensing is different!
The SVS200 has a lower standard maintenance level and more SW licenses included and thus is cheaper.
But: You cannot install internal disks in the SVS200 while in the XP10000 you are open to do it later!

2. The CHIP boards contain processors that can individually be configured to do either
- FC server connectivity
- Continuous Access source or target IO (remote replication)
- External Storage handling

The ACPs are responsible for XP internal disks connectivity including RAID handling.

3. No, the XP10000 always has a combo ACP/CHIP board pair with 16 FC ports and 8 ACP MPs.
There is one free slot pair for anothet CHIP (8, 16 or 32 port)

For the SVS200 see:

Re: FATA HDD For XP12000

1.Is there any special software and license is reuired for connecting EVAs to SVS200 or XP10000?
2.What is backend fabrics for connecting EVAs to XP? Are they standard SAN Switches like 4/32,4/16?
3.Are XP1000's controllers and SVS200 identical?
4.Is there a matrix for checking compatibility of EVAs, SAN Switches,... with XP?
5.Is "HP XP12000/10000 32-Port 4-Gb FC CHIP"
a combined ACP/CHIP board as like as default board in XP?
