Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

I have a faulty hard disk in my EVA. I also have one ungrouped hard disk in the EVA. Can I remove the ungrouped hard disk (without any need to shutdown)to replace the faulty hard disk?

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

Yes. There should also be a [Remove] button on the ungrouped disk drive's properties page.
Click it - the disk will be removed the EVA's namespace and its fault indicator will blink.
But act quick, because the EVAs poller mechanism can rediscover the disk drive if you wait too long ;-)

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

It don't need to be that quick, Uwe.

Perhaps, you have clicked the Ok button.

The latest disk replacemetn I did, on a degraded, manually ungrouped disk.
We click the remove button, and walked 200 m to the server room.
Disk was still flashing (Identifying).

Prcedure is:
1. Click remove.
2. When Ok button appear, don't click.
3. Remove disk.
4. Click OK button.
5. Waite untill disk disappear in CV.
And EVA has stopped beeping.(EVA will beep for 1 min).
6. Install new disk.
7. Groupe new disk, when it appear in CV, under ungrouped disks.

If disk is fully failed, there's no remove button: Start at step 3, and skip step 4 also.

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

Thanks for the answers guys.

Just to make it clear. The disk is fully failed as I have tried to reseat it but it' still failed. I have HSV Storage System Network and I can't find the remove button when I click on the disks. See attached file.

So I will remove the faulty disk in Enclosure 2 Bay 4 as well as the ungrouped hard disk in Enclosure 1 Bay 6. Then I will swap their positions and see if both will work on the new positions. Is this correct?

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

Hi Roberts,

I would suggest don't swap their positions and its not going to make any difference but not at all recommended by HP to reseat a failed drive.

Re-seating of drives works for sometimes but not for long time, so better always replace a failed drive ASAP for you.

And once drive is ungrouped you can remove it directly without pressing "Remove" button also.

Replace the drive and group it to the respective disk group.

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

I agree.
Don't swap the disks.
The failed disk has been mark as failed, and the EVA will recognize it as failed.

To find the remove button, select the disk drive tab (See your own first screen shot).

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

Thanks again for the answers. Sorry, I didn't noticed the remove button.

My plan now is to just include the ungrouped disk in Enclosure 1 in the default disk group. Just another question, it is safe to group this disk right? All data on it will be deleted. Is there a way to verify if the disk is containing data or is used for other purpose that's why it was not included in the group?

Re: Is the ungrouped hard disk in an EVA hot swappable?

You always need to group the disk manually after replacement to its respective disk group. And yes all data will be erased from this drive, no need to worry about it.
