LUN id > 7 on VA7400 not seen on HP-UX

Hi,

I've got a HP9000 L1000 (HP-UX 11.11)server that is connected via a fibre switch to a VA7400.

If I create a LUN on the VA with a LUN id larger than 7, it can't be seen on the HP server even after a 'ioscan -fnC disk' or 'insf -e'. When the LUN id is smaller than 7, an ioscan finds the LUN directly.

And you can create LUN's up to an ID of 1024, but if I don't see them from the HP-UX server...

Any suggestions are highly appreciated.

Can you post up the ioscan -fnk output.

Note that the d7 is a scsi limitation, not necessarily an array limitation.

LUNs greater than 7 are addressed via VSA (Volume Set Addressing) and the 8th lun cannot be represented in 3bit binary (d field) so it 'spills' over into the t field.

ie:

t1d0
t1d1
t1d2
t1d3
t1d4
t1d5
t1d6
t1d7
t2d0 (this is lun 8)
t2d1 (this is lun 9)

etc...

If you're not seeing some LUNs, make sure you are patched up-to-date. PHKL_21607 is an important one... but if you can bring yourself up to current, that would be best.

Thanks, I know that you can calculate the LUN id in the VA from the hardware path of the disk. The ioscan shows only the disks with a LUN id of the VA that is lower or equal than 7 (and they have a status of claimed). I've did an ioscan -fnk as well, the new LUNS with an ID greater than 7 were not detected

it is a new server and the patch bundles from the support plus CD of march 2002 are installed, so the patching should be up to date.

My next guess is your Secure Manager configuration. Assuming you are using SM, you should check that permissions and WWN's are correct.

I haven't had this trouble before... so I'm a little at a loss as to what it could be.

Can you post your array configuration? (armdsp command output) Please post as much detail as possible.

Perhaps one of us will see something in there.

Kurt,

The VA was designed with redundancy in mind, and was not intended to be run with the two controllers in different host modes. You need to use the armhost command to set the host behavior on a LUN by LUN basis. I think this is your problem.

Please try configuring with the armhost command, and please do let us know the results.

Barring that, you should get the response center involved.
